Zug U19 squad reigning champs

By Paul Craig

Last weekend the U19 team travelled to Neuchâtel for their annual 7s tournament as reigning champs. Zug has a very experienced squad of 12 with over half having represented Switzerland at national level 7s.

First up was two pool matches, firstly against Nyon where our lads made a strong start with an 8 tries to 2 win, with six different try scorers. Next was local rivals Northern Lions and Zug again put in a very composed and well organised performance to score 10 tries to 1. Some patient build up, making the ball do the running, created space time and again to allow a clinical attack.

Finishing the group in top spot saw Zug take on Servette in the semi-final where Servette started strongly and tried to make the game physical rather than tactical. After a tight and energy sapping first half Zug took a 2 try lead and then controlled the pace and possession to their game plan, making Servette chase and do the running. Zug came out winners 5 tries to 2 in the toughest match of the day so far. The final beckons.

ERL (Lausanne) had come through their side of the pool also unbeaten to meet regular final rivals Zug. Having had a tight semi-final Zug were now out to show they could control from the start and patient play soon exposed the holes in the ERL defence. Zug ran in 6 tries for zero return with some excellent defensive play from the whole team to ensure a clean sheet.

Well done lads, great performance again, looking forward to the Swiss Super 7 final in Bern in a few weeks time.
