Zug Rugby Club’s annual Open Day on Sunday, 23 August, proved to be a fantastic celebration of rugby, community, and the start of a new season. Players, parents, coaches, and supporters from across the region came together for a day packed with training, fun, and inspiration. Over 400 participants and visitors underlined the growing popularity of rugby in Zug.

The highlight of the day was the opportunity for players to work alongside Scotland international and British & Irish Lions prop Zander Fagerson. Joining our season opening event for the second time, Fagerson dedicated his day to coaching every section of the club as club representative Alastair McCaig noted, "Once again, Zander spent the entire day coaching players from the Zug Under 6s all the way through to the adult 1st XV."

Players and families appreciated the time Zander spent signing rugby balls, shirts and hats, as well as taking photographs and answering questions. His willingness to engage with everyone, regardless of age or experience, left a lasting impression and club members praised him as an inspiring role model whose generosity and enthusiasm embodied the values of rugby.

The Open Day was also an opportunity to welcome new players to the sport. Designed to be accessible to everyone, the event encouraged newcomers of all ages to try rugby in a friendly and inclusive environment. Training activities across the different age groups showcased the club’s commitment to player development, teamwork, and enjoyment of the game. It also provided the club with the opportunity to recognize and reward the 9 players who were selected to play for Switzerland during the previous season.

Looking Ahead

With the Open Day successfully launching the new campaign, attention now turns to the upcoming season. Teams across the club, from the junior age groups to the senior squads, are preparing for a busy programme of league and development fixtures in the weeks ahead. The enthusiasm and turnout seen on Open Day have provided a strong foundation for another exciting year of rugby in Zug, with players eager to put into practice the lessons learned from one of the sport's leading professionals.
