On Sunday 5 May, the Zug Rugby Club U10 team travelled to Geneva for one of the toughest tournaments of the season — and came home as champions after an exciting day of rugby.
The weekend started with some great team bonding. A group of players took the train to Geneva on Saturday evening and spent the evening bowling and enjoying burgers together. Others drove down, crossing the Röstigraben to meet their teammates at the GePLO rugby pitches.
Zug was represented by a squad of 15 players, a great mix of younger and older players, with both experienced and new faces. The team spirit was high, and all players got time on the pitch throughout the day. We also happily shared some of our players —eight in total — with the Barbarians team, who needed extra numbers. It was brilliant to see our players giving it their all, scoring tries and tackling hard for the Barbarians too!
Match Highlights
Zug: 6 – GePLO 1: 4
A confident start, with good teamwork and strong tackling helping Zug take the win.
Zug: 9 – Barbarians: 5
A fast, open game with plenty of running rugby. Zug kept their focus and took their chances well.
Zug: 13 – Avusy: 2
Zug’s best performance of the day, with great passing, support play, and lots of tries.
Zug: 8 – GePLO 2: 2
A calm and smart game. Zug controlled the ball well and defended with energy.
With four wins from four games, Zug qualified for the final —a rematch against GePLO 1, who had added some fresh players from their second team. The final was always going to be tough, and it was!
The Final Showdown
GePLO scored first, but Zug stayed calm and fought back. The team showed brilliant defence, twice stopping GePLO from scoring by holding the ball up over the try line. Zug managed to equalise at 2–2, and nearly scored the winner, but the try was not given. With the score tied at the final whistle, Zug were crowned champions thanks to their earlier win over GePLO 1.
A Fantastic Day Out
This tournament showed everything that’s great about this team: hard work, teamwork, and lots of heart. The coaches were very proud of how everyone played and supported each other, both on and off the pitch.
Well done to all our players, families and coaches — Zug U10s did us proud!
