Zug U14: Host U14 tournament in Baar

Alastair McCaig25 Sep 2024 - 09:33

On Saturday 21st, Zug hosted an under 14s tournament in Baar with teams from Zurich, Lugano and the NSRV amalgamated team coming too.

It was a great day for rugby as the sun was out with no sign of clouds and early morning, the pitch had a covering of dew making it ideal conditions for running rugby and quality tackling.

Despite 6 players from our team cancelling following illness during school trips, we still had enough players for a full team and a couple of subs.

The first game saw Zug take on the NSRV team who had a good squad of 19 players. With four teams in the tournament, matches would be 20 minutes long with a 5 minute break in the middle and played on a full size pitch. NSRV got off to a good start and held a lead for quite sometime before the Zug team fully woke up. The final 3-3 score was probably a fair reflection of the teams.

Zug’s second match was against Lugano who had not been to any of the season's previous tournaments and were somewhat of an unknown quantity. In the early stages of the game, Zug scored a breakaway try running it in from over the halfway line. This looked to have knocked the confidence of the Lugano team who then conceded a further three more tries before the end of the game. With a final score of 4 - 0, I am sure we will face tougher matches against them later in the year.

The last game was a winner-take-all affair with Zurich and Zug both able to take top honours for the day if they won. This season has seen Zug and Zurich take turns beating each other and unfortunately, Saturday was the turn for Zurich to come out top following a 2-0 win.

As this was a home tournament, we needed a full squad of parents to help out with the catering for all the players, coaches and visiting parents. As ever "Team Carolina" headed up the organisation for all of this and as expected everything ran very smoothly. The combination of hotdogs, drinks and a very generous selection of home-baked cakes donated by the parents ensured everyone was well-fed and watered. Good rugby, good food, good weather all adding up to a great day. Many thanks to everyone for all you did in setting up, catering and cleaning up afterwards. A great team effort.
