On Sunday U19 team got the new season off to a great start with a convincing away win over Northern Lions in Würenlos. With 9 of the 20 man squad making their U19 debuts it was great to see the team gel and function seamlessly under pressure in the same we have seen in training.
The first half was a tight contest with both teams hitting their tackles and defending fiercely, however, Zug were kicking clever to maintain territorial advantage which paid off with tries on 12 and 20 minutes to get a 14 point lead. The contest was close though and Lions started to gain territory, with a charged down kick on the zug 5m line giving Lions valuable possession and they pressed hard to get a try by the posts and close the gap to 7 points on the half hour mark. Zug continued to push territorial advantage and a clever cross-field kick, in behind the Lions defence, saw the ball bounce up into the onrushing Zug full backs arms and a converted try to end the half at 7 - 21.
Zug’s replacements during the break started the game with high energy and the fitness across the team started to make a difference within 10 minutes of the second half. Comfortably switching the play from sideline to sideline the Lions were stretched and gaps were appearing in their defence. 7 further tries and 5 conversions made for a convincing win for Zug though Lions fought hard until the end.
A super start for a new look Zug team who can’t wait for the next match to get stuck in again.
